How ChatGPT Is Being Used in 2025: New Research from OpenAI and Harvard

A recent Search Engine Journal article highlights new research from OpenAI and Harvard. According to the study, “Seeking Information” messages now account for 24% of ChatGPT conversations, up from 14% a year earlier.

The three dominant message topics are Practical Guidance, Seeking Information (similar to a web search), and Writing, which together make up about 77% of usage. At work, Writing is the top use case, representing roughly 40% of work-related messages. Education is another major use, with about 10% of all conversations involving tutoring or teaching. Non-work usage also rose significantly, jumping from 53% to 73% in just 12 months.

Globally, early gender gaps have narrowed, and usage in the lowest-income countries has grown more than four times faster than in the highest-income countries.

Looking ahead, it will be vital to track how legal professionals use AI tools and remain agile in adjusting approach, content, and strategy to meet them where they are.

As of July, ChatGPT reached more than 700 million weekly active users globally, sending roughly 2.5 billion messages per day, about 18 billion each week.
